Kashmir looks very different from one season to the next, so no single month is the "right" one. It depends on what you want to see: snow, flowers, green meadows or autumn colour. Here is how the year usually goes, from people who live in the valley.
December to February: Winter and snow
This is the coldest part of the year. Nights in Srinagar often drop below freezing, and Gulmarg and Pahalgam usually get regular snowfall. The harshest 40 days of winter, known locally as Chillai Kalan, traditionally run from late December to the end of January.
- Good for: snow play, skiing in Gulmarg, white landscapes and cosy, well-heated houseboat stays.
- Keep in mind: when and how much it snows changes every year, so nobody can promise snow on a particular date. Roads can close for a while after heavy snow, and some stretches may be open only to 4x4 vehicles or vehicles with snow chains. Access to Sonamarg can also be affected by snow, so check the road status before you go. Flights can be delayed by fog or bad weather.
- Pack: thermals, a heavy jacket, waterproof shoes, gloves and a warm cap. Snow boots and coats can usually be rented locally in Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
March: The thaw and almond blossoms
Snow starts melting in the lower valley, while higher places like Gulmarg may still have snow. In Srinagar the almond trees bloom, and Badamwari garden is a lovely place to see them. The weather can change quickly from sunny days to cold rain, so carry layers.
April: Tulips and spring
April is one of the most popular months to visit. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar usually opens for a few weeks in spring. The exact dates depend on the season, so check them before planning your trip around the garden. The Mughal gardens start turning green and the meadows around Pahalgam come back to life. Mornings and nights are still cool.
May and June: Peak season
For most families this is the easiest time to visit. Days are mild, and the main destinations (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam and Doodhpathri) are generally open. The meadows are fresh and green. Early in the season you may still find patches of snow around Sonamarg's glacier area and the upper parts of Gulmarg.
- Good for: families, honeymooners, first-time visitors, pony rides and walks in the meadows.
- Keep in mind: this is the busiest time, so hotels, houseboats and cabs fill up fast. Book early, especially around school holidays.
July and August: Green and lush
Kashmir does not get a heavy monsoon like much of India, though showers do come and go. The valleys are at their greenest, and rivers like the Lidder in Pahalgam run full. The annual Amarnath Yatra also usually takes place in these months, and Pahalgam is the base for one of its routes. Expect more traffic around Pahalgam. Access to some areas, such as Chandanwari, may be restricted for regular sightseeing during the Yatra, so check the current rules before you travel.
September and October: Autumn colour
Autumn is a lovely, quieter time in the valley. Skies are often clear, days are comfortable and the summer crowds have gone. From late October the chinar trees start turning red and gold, especially in Srinagar's gardens and along the Pahalgam road, and the colour often lasts into November. From around late October into early November, the saffron fields near Pampore flower in purple.
- Good for: photography, couples and relaxed sightseeing.
- Pack: a warm jacket, because evenings get cold quickly.
November: Late autumn
The last chinar leaves fall, nights turn cold, and the first snow sometimes reaches the higher areas towards the end of the month. It is a quiet time to travel, but some outdoor activities stop for the season and the weather is harder to predict.
Getting around at each destination
In any month, remember that some sightseeing spots are reached only by local transport. In Pahalgam, trips to Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari are usually made in local union taxis. In Gulmarg and Sonamarg, local taxis or ponies are used to reach certain points. Rates are set locally and change, so check them when you arrive or ask your travel planner to arrange this in advance.
For planning, Pahalgam is about 90-95 km from Srinagar, roughly 2.5-3 hours by road. Gulmarg is about 50 km away, roughly 1.5-2 hours. Drive times can be longer in snow or heavy traffic.
Tips for planning
- In winter, keep a spare day in your plan in case of weather delays.
- Carry layers in every season, because mountain weather changes fast.
- Keep some cash with you, as card payments and mobile signal can be patchy in remote spots. Prepaid SIM cards from outside J&K usually do not work here, while postpaid connections generally do, so check with your operator before you travel.
- In peak months, Gulmarg Gondola tickets are often booked online in advance. Check the current booking rules before you go.
- Give yourself time. Five to seven days lets you enjoy the valley without spending most of it in a car.
