Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam Tour: The Classic Circuit
Quick answer
For a Srinagar Gulmarg Pahalgam tour, most travellers start in Srinagar, visit Gulmarg as a day trip or with one night, spend two nights in Pahalgam, then return to Srinagar to fly out. Plan at least 4 nights, ideally 5. Srinagar to Gulmarg is about 50 km, roughly 1.5-2 hours, and Srinagar to Pahalgam about 95 km, roughly 2.5-3 hours.
Prices shown are starting prices, per person on twin sharing unless marked per couple or per group. Your final quote depends on travel dates, hotel category, vehicle and group size.
A sensible order for the classic circuit
Most Kashmir trips start and end at Srinagar airport, so this circuit works best as a loop from the city. A relaxed order looks like this:
Srinagar first: settle in, see Dal Lake and the Mughal Gardens, and give everyone a day to get used to the cooler air.
Gulmarg next: about 50 km from Srinagar, roughly 1.5-2 hours by road via Tangmarg, so it works as a day trip or with one night.
Pahalgam after that: about 95 km from Srinagar, roughly 2.5-3 hours, up the Lidder valley in Anantnag district.
Back to Srinagar: if your nights allow, spend the last one in the city, perhaps on a houseboat, so a slow road or a change in weather does not put your flight at risk. On a shorter trip, leave Pahalgam early on the last morning and choose a later flight.
You can swap Gulmarg and Pahalgam if hotel availability or weather suggests it. There is no quick road between Gulmarg and Pahalgam, as the drive goes back through Srinagar and makes for a long day, so most plans avoid that leg. Our guide on how to reach Pahalgam from Srinagar covers the drive in more detail.
How many nights in each place
4 nights: 2 in Srinagar with Gulmarg as a day trip, and 2 in Pahalgam. Our 5-day Kashmir Family Special and Kashmir Honeymoon Delight packages cover these three places.
5 nights: add a Sonamarg day trip from Srinagar (about 80 km, roughly 2.5-3 hours each way), or spend one night in Gulmarg for an unhurried day there. Our 6-day Kashmir Grand Tour covers all four places.
6 nights or more: add a houseboat night, a quiet day at Doodhpathri, or both. Our 7-day Complete Kashmir Experience includes Sonamarg and Doodhpathri as well.
Give Pahalgam two nights if you can. Its side valleys need a full day on their own, and the drive in from Srinagar takes most of a morning.
What to see in each place
Srinagar: a shikara ride on Dal Lake, a night on a houseboat, Mughal Gardens such as Nishat and Shalimar, and the old city markets. In spring the tulip garden usually blooms for a few weeks, depending on the weather.
Gulmarg: wide meadows, the Gulmarg Gondola cable car, which runs in two phases, and snow play in winter. The Gondola can pause in strong wind or bad weather, so keep the day flexible and book tickets ahead in busy months.
Pahalgam: easy walks along the Lidder river, then the side valleys. Pahalgam is the base for Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari, where snow often lingers into early summer. On the drive from Srinagar you can stop at the saffron fields of Pampore, which flower in autumn, and the Avantipora temple ruins.
Local taxis, ponies and weather
Trips from Pahalgam to Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari usually run in local union taxis rather than your own car. In Gulmarg and Sonamarg, some sightseeing is done by local taxi or pony. These are hired locally on the day, and we explain how it works when we send your written plan.
Weather in the mountains changes quickly. Gulmarg and Pahalgam usually see snow in winter, but conditions vary each year, so nobody can promise snow on a specific date. Pack warm layers in every season, and see our Kashmir packing list by season for what to bring.

How many days do I need for Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam?
Five days and four nights is a comfortable minimum: two nights in Srinagar with Gulmarg as a day trip, and two nights in Pahalgam. If you want to add Sonamarg or Doodhpathri, plan six or seven days.
Should I stay overnight in Gulmarg or visit it as a day trip?
Gulmarg is about 50 km from Srinagar, roughly 1.5-2 hours by road, so a day trip works well for most travellers. Staying one night gives you a slower, more relaxed day, which many families and couples enjoy.
Which order is better, Gulmarg first or Pahalgam first?
Either works, and we adjust it to hotel availability and weather. If your nights allow, end with a night in Srinagar so you are close to the airport; on a shorter trip, leave Pahalgam early and choose a later flight.
Can our private car take us to Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari?
Usually not. These side trips from Pahalgam normally run in local union taxis, and some sightseeing in Gulmarg and Sonamarg is by local taxi or pony. We explain how this works in your written plan before you travel.
Is this circuit suitable for young children and elderly parents?
Yes, with sensible pacing. Spending two nights in each base, avoiding the long Gulmarg to Pahalgam drive in one day, and carrying warm layers makes the trip much easier for kids and older travellers.
