Pahalgam sits in the upper Lidder valley in south Kashmir, and for most visitors the trip starts at Srinagar Airport. There is no airport or train station in Pahalgam, so the last part of the journey is always by road. The good news is that it's a pleasant drive, and with a little planning it is easy, even with children or elderly parents.
Distance and drive time
Srinagar Airport to Pahalgam is about 95-100 km, roughly 2.5-3 hours of driving. Traffic, roadworks, weather and stops on the way can all add to that. In peak season and on holiday weekends, expect it to take longer. In winter the road can be slow after fresh snow, so leave extra time.
The route
Most drivers take this route:
- Leave the airport and drive through the Srinagar outskirts to the national highway heading south.
- Pass Pampore, known for its saffron fields, then Awantipora and Bijbehara.
- Near Anantnag town (around Khanabal), turn off onto the Pahalgam road.
- Drive up the Lidder valley through Aishmuqam and Batakote, then follow the river into Pahalgam town.
The last stretch along the Lidder river is the prettiest part. The valley narrows, pine forests close in and the air turns noticeably cooler.
Your options for getting there
Private cab (most comfortable)
A private taxi from the airport straight to your hotel in Pahalgam is the simplest choice for families and groups with luggage. You can:
- Take a taxi from the airport's taxi counter. Check the current rates there before you set off.
- Book a cab in advance through a local travel agency, so the driver is waiting when you land. Many travellers keep the same cab for the rest of their Kashmir trip.
Booking ahead is worth it in the busy months (summer, and the winter holidays around year-end), when cabs at the airport can be in short supply.
Shared taxis and buses (budget option)
If you are travelling light and don't mind changing vehicles, you can go from Srinagar to Anantnag by shared taxi or bus, then take another shared taxi or local bus on to Pahalgam. It costs less but takes longer, and it's awkward with heavy bags or small children. Timings vary, so ask locally on the day.
By train, part of the way
Kashmir's railway line has a station at Anantnag, a short way from the town and roughly 45-50 km from Pahalgam. You can travel by rail within the valley, but you will still need a taxi from Anantnag for the drive up to Pahalgam. Check current train schedules before you plan around it.
Worth stopping on the way
You don't have to rush. A few easy stops break up the drive:
- Pampore saffron fields: the saffron flowers in autumn, and shops along the highway sell saffron and dry fruits all year.
- Awantipora ruins: the remains of ancient stone temples, right by the road.
- Cricket bat workshops: between Sangam and Bijbehara, many roadside units make bats from Kashmir willow, and many have showrooms where you can stop and look.
- Tea and a snack: roadside dhabas and bakeries along the route are good places for kahwa and local bread.

When you arrive in Pahalgam
This catches many first-timers out. Outside taxis, including the one that brought you from Srinagar, generally aren't allowed to take you to Pahalgam's main sightseeing spots. Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari are covered by Pahalgam's local union taxis. Some meadows and trails are reached on foot or by pony. Rates are set locally and change, and access to some spots can change too, so check the current rates and which places are open at the taxi stand or with your hotel. Gulmarg and Sonamarg have similar local transport rules, so it helps to know this before your trip.
Practical tips
- Land early if you can. A morning or midday flight lets you reach Pahalgam in daylight and enjoy the valley views.
- Carry a warm layer. Pahalgam is cooler than Srinagar, even in summer, and evenings can be chilly.
- Keep some cash handy. Mobile signal and card machines can be patchy in some spots.
- Check the weather in winter. Snow can slow the road or close it for a while. Ask your driver or hotel about conditions before you leave.
- Expect busy roads in pilgrimage season. During the annual Amarnath Yatra, the Pahalgam road gets much busier and traffic may be regulated. Leave extra time.
- Check your SIM before you travel. Prepaid connections from outside Jammu & Kashmir generally don't work here, while postpaid usually does. Confirm with your mobile provider before you travel.
Making it part of a bigger trip
Many visitors combine Pahalgam with Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Doodhpathri. Because Pahalgam is in the south of the valley, it often works well as the first or last stop, depending on your flights. A planned route with one cab throughout means fewer transfers and less waiting around.
