Pahalgam Travel Guide: Aru, Betaab, Chandanwari and the Lidder

Plan Pahalgam the local way: Aru, Betaab Valley, Chandanwari, the Lidder river, union taxis, ponies, seasons and how many days to spend.

Pahalgam sits in south Kashmir where the East and West Lidder streams meet and come down out of the mountains together. Pine and fir forest, open meadows and cold, clear water are what most families picture when they think of a Kashmir holiday, and Pahalgam has all three. We are based at Batakote, on the Pahalgam road in Anantnag district, so these are the roads we drive every season. This guide covers what to see, how getting around works, and how to plan your days.

Getting to Pahalgam

Pahalgam is about 95 km from Srinagar, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road depending on traffic and stops. The drive passes the saffron fields around Pampore and plenty of orchards, then turns off through Anantnag district and follows the Lidder valley up into the hills. Most visitors come in by road from Srinagar, which is where the nearest airport is.

Plan to arrive by afternoon. That gives you time to settle in, walk along the river and get used to the cooler mountain air before a full day of sightseeing.

The Lidder River

The Lidder runs right through Pahalgam, and much of the town's charm comes from it. You can sit on the banks, walk the riverside paths, or just listen to the water from your hotel. The current is fast and very cold, even in summer, so keep children well back from the edge and don't try to wade in. When conditions allow, river rafting is offered on some stretches. Go only with registered operators, wear the life jacket and helmet provided, follow the guide's instructions, and check current rules and rates locally.

Aru Valley

Aru is a quiet village and meadow about 12 km from Pahalgam, up a winding road beside the West Lidder stream. It's green and open, with forested slopes and peaks behind it. It's a good place for a slow morning, a picnic or a pony ride across the meadow.

Aru is also the starting point for well-known treks, including the routes towards the Kolahoi glacier and the Tarsar-Marsar lakes. These are proper multi-day treks that need a guide, good fitness and preparation. Families on a sightseeing trip usually just enjoy the village and the meadows.

Betaab Valley

Betaab Valley is a short drive out of Pahalgam on the road towards Chandanwari, roughly halfway there. It takes its name from the Hindi film Betaab, which was shot here. It's a well-kept stretch of meadow with a stream, walking paths and mountain views, and it's very popular for family photos. There is usually an entry ticket, so check current rates at the gate.

Chandanwari

Chandanwari is further up the same road, about 16 km from Pahalgam. It's best known as the starting point of the Pahalgam route of the annual Amarnath Yatra. Early in the season you'll often find snow lying here, and many visitors come to see snow up close. How much snow there is depends on the year and the month, so we never promise it for a given date.

In winter, heavy snowfall can close the road to Chandanwari. During the Yatra period, access may also be controlled. Check current conditions before you set out.

Union Taxis and Ponies

This is the part that surprises many first-time visitors. Private tourist cars from outside usually can't take you to Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari. These spots are served by local union taxis that run from Pahalgam on set routes. Your driver will drop you at the taxi stand, and you book a union taxi from there, either for each spot separately or as a combined trip.

Ponies are another big part of local tourism, for meadow rides and short trails. Fares for both taxis and ponies are set locally and can change from season to season, so confirm the current rate and exactly which points are included before you start. A few tips:

  • Agree on the route and stops clearly before getting in or mounting
  • Carry some cash, as network coverage can be patchy in the higher valleys
  • Choose a registered pony handler, and ask for helmets for children where offered

When to Visit

Every season in Pahalgam feels different:

  • Spring (around March to May): fresh green meadows, flowers and pleasant days. Snow often lingers at higher points like Chandanwari early in the season.
  • Summer (around June to August): green and busy, the main holiday season. Weather in the mountains can change quickly, so keep a rain layer handy.
  • Autumn (around September to November): clear skies, golden light and crisp mornings. A lovely time for photography.
  • Winter (around December to February): cold, often snowy and peaceful. Some roads and sightseeing points may close because of snow.

Even in summer, evenings are cool, so bring warm layers whatever the month.

How Many Days to Spend

Two nights in Pahalgam suits most travellers. Use one full day for Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari by union taxi, and keep a slower half-day for the river and the town. Many Kashmir itineraries combine Pahalgam with Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Doodhpathri. Being on the Pahalgam road ourselves, we can also arrange local Pahalgam day trips.

Practical Tips

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip, because meadow paths can be muddy
  • Carry sunscreen and sunglasses, as the mountain sun is strong
  • Keep some snacks and water with you on the valley trips
  • Respect local customs and keep the meadows and river clean
