Kashmir has been a honeymoon favourite for Indian couples for generations, and it is easy to see why. You get quiet mornings on Dal Lake, meadows ringed by pine forest, river valleys and snow-capped peaks, all in one trip. The trick is to plan at a pace that leaves room for each other, not just for sightseeing. Here is how we would plan it as locals who live in the valley.
When to Go
Every season has its own mood, so pick the one that suits you both.
- Spring (March to May): Fresh green meadows, blossoms in the orchards and, for a few weeks in spring, the tulip garden in Srinagar. Days are pleasant and nights are cool.
- Summer (June to August): Comfortable weather for walks, pony rides and long drives. This is busy season, so book stays early.
- Autumn (September to November): Clear skies on most days and golden-red chinar trees later in the season. A calm, romantic time with fewer crowds.
- Winter (December to February): Snow is likely in Gulmarg and the higher areas, but nobody can promise snow on particular dates. Snow can also slow or close roads to places like Sonamarg and Doodhpathri, so check conditions, pack properly and keep your plans flexible.
A Suggested 6-Night Honeymoon Itinerary
You can stretch or shorten this, but six nights lets you enjoy the main places without feeling rushed.
Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar
Check in to a houseboat or hotel and rest. Late in the afternoon, take a shikara ride on Dal Lake. Agree the rate before you set off. Sunset on the water is one of the simple highlights of any Kashmir trip.
Day 2: Srinagar Gardens and Old City
See the Mughal gardens (Nishat, Shalimar and Chashme Shahi), with their terraces and old chinar trees. Check current timings and entry rules. Many couples get photos taken in traditional Kashmiri dress at the gardens or by the lake. Spend the evening on the boulevard or shopping for pashmina, papier-mache and dry fruits.
Day 3: Day Trip to Gulmarg
Gulmarg is about 50 km from Srinagar, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road. Enjoy the open meadow and, if you wish, ride the Gulmarg Gondola. It depends on the weather, so check current ticket rules and book ahead, as it fills up in peak season. Local transport and ponies in Gulmarg are run by local operators, so ask about the system there.
Day 4: Sonamarg or Doodhpathri
Choose one more day trip from Srinagar. Sonamarg, about 80 km away (roughly 2.5 to 3 hours), offers river views, mountain scenery and views towards the Thajiwas glacier area, usually reached by pony or on foot. As in Gulmarg, local transport in Sonamarg is handled by local operators. Doodhpathri is quieter, with soft green meadows and streams, about 40 to 45 km away, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours.
Day 5: Drive to Pahalgam
Pahalgam is about 90 to 95 km from Srinagar, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road. On the way you pass the saffron fields near Pampore (the flowers bloom only for a short spell in autumn) and willow bat workshops. Settle into your hotel (many are close to the Lidder river) and take an easy evening walk.
Day 6: Pahalgam Valleys
Visit Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari. These spots are reached by local union taxis, not your own cab, so plan for that on the day. Some roads, such as the one to Chandanwari, can be closed in heavy snow or restricted during the annual Yatra season, so check locally. For a slower day, take a walk along the Lidder or a pony ride to a meadow near Pahalgam. Agree the route and rate with the pony operator first, and wear sturdy shoes.
Day 7: Departure
After an early breakfast, drive to Srinagar airport, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours from Pahalgam. An afternoon flight gives you a relaxed journey, and perhaps time for some last-minute shopping.
Shorter or Longer Trips
- 5 nights: Drop the Sonamarg or Doodhpathri day trip, or see a Srinagar garden on arrival day if you land early.
- 7 or 8 nights: Add a night in Gulmarg instead of a day trip, or spend an extra night in Pahalgam to simply relax by the river. Slower is often better on a honeymoon.
Honeymoon Tips from the Valley
- Book a houseboat night: Even one night on a houseboat makes the trip feel special. Ask for a quiet location and check photos and reviews before booking.
- Do not overpack the days: Mountain roads take time. Leave free evenings for a slow dinner or a walk.
- Pack layers: Even in summer, mornings and evenings can be chilly in Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam. Carry a warm jacket, comfortable shoes and sunscreen.
- Know the local transport rules: In Pahalgam (for Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari) and in Gulmarg and Sonamarg, sightseeing is often done by local union taxis or ponies. Fares and rules change, so check current rates locally.
- Mobile connectivity: Prepaid SIMs from outside Jammu and Kashmir have traditionally not worked here, while postpaid connections usually do. Check with your mobile operator before you travel.
- Carry ID and some cash: Keep photo ID handy for hotel check-ins, and carry cash for smaller shops and pony rides.
- Respect local customs: Dress modestly when visiting shrines and mosques, and ask before photographing local people.
- Plan surprises in advance: Cake, flower decoration or a candlelight dinner can usually be arranged by hotels with some notice.
Why Plan with a Local Agency
A local team knows how long drives really take, which areas are quieter, and how the union taxi and pony systems work in each place. Roaming Routes is a J&K Tourism registered travel agency (Regd. JKEA00002355) based at Batakote on the Pahalgam road in Anantnag district. We plan Kashmir tour packages covering Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam and Doodhpathri, along with local Pahalgam trips, and can shape a honeymoon around your dates, budget and pace.
