Betaab Valley sits on the road from Pahalgam to Chandanwari. It is an open, grassy meadow with the East Lidder river running through it, pine and deodar forest on the slopes, and snow-capped mountains behind.
Locals used to call it Hagan or Hagoon Valley. It took its present name from the 1983 Hindi film Betaab, which was shot here, and the name has stuck ever since.
For most visitors, Betaab is the easiest of Pahalgam's side valleys to enjoy. The meadow is mostly level, with short walking paths, small wooden bridges and plenty of spots by the water to sit down. Children, grandparents and honeymoon couples usually manage it comfortably, though the ground near the river can be uneven or wet. You can see it in a couple of hours, and it fits easily into a day with Chandanwari or Aru Valley.
What to see and do.
Walk the paths beside the clear, fast-flowing Lidder and cross the small wooden footbridges.
Spread out a picnic on the open meadow, with pine forest and mountain views all around.
Take family and couple photos in the meadow where the film Betaab was shot.
Spend some time along the quieter forest edges, which are usually calmer than the main lawns.
Continue a short way up the same road to Chandanwari, where patches of snow often stay on into early summer, depending on the year.
Pair it with Aru Valley on the same day for a full Pahalgam sightseeing circuit by local taxi.
In winter, if the road is open, you may see the meadow and river under snow.

Local tips.
What we tell our own guests before they head to Betaab Valley.
Book a local union taxi in Pahalgam for Betaab, and agree up front whether Chandanwari and Aru are included in the same trip.
There is usually an entry ticket at the gate. Carry some cash and check the current charges on the spot.
Even in summer, carry a light jacket. It gets cool near the water and in the evenings.
Wear comfortable shoes with a good grip, because the grass and riverbanks can be wet and slippery.
Do not wade into the river or climb on the rocks in it, and keep children well back. The water is ice-cold and the current is stronger than it looks.

Will there be snow at Betaab Valley?
The meadow is often under snow in the winter months, though road access can be limited or closed then. Snow can also linger higher up towards Chandanwari into spring.
