Snow bridge, pine forest and the start of the Amarnath trail

About Chandanwari

About Chandanwari

Chandanwari is where the road out of Pahalgam comes to an end. You drive up the narrow valley past Betaab Valley, with the stream rushing beside you and pine forest on both slopes.

The road stops at an open, cold valley floor at roughly 2,900 m (about 9,500 ft), where snow often lingers well into the warmer months. For visitors who are not trekking, it is an easy way to get a feel for high-mountain country.

Chandanwari is best known for two things. In early summer, packed snow from the winter often forms a natural snow bridge over the stream, and families come to see it, play in the snow around it and take photos. It is also the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra on the Pahalgam route, so in yatra season the place fills with pilgrims, camps and langar tents. Most people visit as a half-day trip from Pahalgam, often together with Betaab Valley on the same road.

What to see and do.

  1. See the snow bridge over the stream, which often forms in early summer when snow from the winter is still packed in the gorge. Step onto it only where locals say it is safe.
  2. Enjoy the drive up from Pahalgam along the stream, through pine and fir forest, with the river beside you most of the way.
  3. Stop at Betaab Valley on the way up or back. It sits on the same road, so it fits easily into the same trip.
  4. Play in the snow on the slopes around the road head, where snow patches often last longer than in Pahalgam town.
  5. See where the Amarnath Yatra's Pahalgam route begins, with the trail climbing toward Pissu Top and Sheshnag.
  6. Have hot tea, Maggi or kahwa at the small seasonal stalls that usually set up near the road head.
  7. Take photos of the river, the forest and the snowy ridges, which look especially good in the soft morning light.

Local tips.

What we tell our own guests before they head to Chandanwari.

  • Carry warm layers, a waterproof jacket and shoes with good grip, even in summer. It is much colder at Chandanwari than in Pahalgam, and the snow can be slippery.
  • Be careful around the snow bridge. Running water can hollow it out from below as the season warms. Never go underneath it, keep away from thin or melting edges, stay off it late in the season, and follow local advice.
  • Plan to combine Chandanwari with Betaab Valley using local union taxis from Pahalgam. Aru is on a separate road, so add it only if you have time. Check current fares and rules locally.
  • If your trip falls in the Amarnath Yatra season, check current access rules for tourists before you go, as movement on this road is regulated during the yatra.
  • Start early in the day for clearer views, fewer crowds and time to get back to Pahalgam before the evening gets cold.

Ask on WhatsApp
Is there always snow at Chandanwari?

No. Snow is most likely from late spring into early summer, and the snow bridge depends on how much snow fell that winter and how quickly it melts. We cannot promise snow on a particular date, but we can tell you what conditions look like closer to your trip.

Can we take our own car or tour cab to Chandanwari?

Usually not. Sightseeing from Pahalgam to Chandanwari, Betaab Valley and Aru is done in local union taxis. Fares are set locally by the taxi union and do change, so check current rates at the Pahalgam taxi stand, or ask us when planning your package.

Can tourists visit Chandanwari during the Amarnath Yatra?

Chandanwari is the yatra's starting point on the Pahalgam route, so tourist access may be restricted or regulated during the yatra season. Rules can change each year, so check the current position before you travel. Call or WhatsApp us on +91 91038 87738 and we will help you plan around it.
