Lidder river town with pine forests, meadows and mountain valleys

About Pahalgam

About Pahalgam

Pahalgam sits where the two streams of the Lidder river meet, at roughly 2,100-2,200 m in the Anantnag district of south Kashmir. The town has pine forests, open meadows and snow-capped ridges, and you can hear the river from much of the town.

For many families it is one of the calmer stops on a Kashmir trip. You can walk along the water, sip kahwa at a roadside stall or just sit and watch shepherds move their flocks across the slopes.

Pahalgam is also the base for some popular side trips. Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari are each a short drive up the side valleys, and the town is a starting point for several well-known treks. Our office is at Batakote, on the Pahalgam road itself, so Pahalgam trips are close to home for us and easy to plan with us directly.

What to see and do.

  1. Take a local taxi to Aru Valley, a meadow village about 12 km upstream. It is popular for picnics and pony rides and is a starting point for treks.
  2. Visit Betaab Valley on the Chandanwari road, a green, river-fed valley with walking paths, mountain views and picnic spots.
  3. Drive up to Chandanwari, about 16 km from town, where in many years snow stays on the slopes into the warmer months. Access depends on the season, and you go by local taxi.
  4. Go white-water rafting on the Lidder in the Yanner area on the road into Pahalgam, with registered local operators. Check age limits and safety rules before you book.
  5. Walk along the Lidder riverbank and through the pine forests close to town. The walks are easy and suit all ages.
  6. Try trout fishing in the Lidder and its side streams, which have long been known for trout. You need a fishing licence from the J&K Fisheries Department, so check current rules first.
  7. See the Mamaleshwar (Mamal) Shiva temple, an old stone temple believed to be centuries old. It is about 1 km from the main town, across the river.

Local tips.

What we tell our own guests before they head to Pahalgam.

  • Local sightseeing to Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari is run by Pahalgam's local union taxis, and outside vehicles usually cannot go to these spots. Budget for this and check current rates on arrival.
  • Pony rides are offered at several points. Agree on the route and duration before you start, and ask for the official rate list from the pony association or the local tourism office.
  • Pack layers even in summer, because mornings and evenings by the river can turn cold quickly.
  • Allow at least two nights in Pahalgam so you can see the side valleys without rushing.
  • Roads and access rules can change with weather and season, so check current conditions with us or locally before you head out to higher spots.

Ask on WhatsApp
How many days do I need in Pahalgam?

Two nights is a comfortable minimum. That gives you one full day for Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari by local taxi, plus time for a riverside walk or rafting. Add a day if you want a slower pace or a short hike.

Will there be snow in Pahalgam when I visit?

Snow usually comes in the winter months, but the amount and timing vary every year, so nobody can promise snow on particular dates. In spring and early summer you may still see snow on the higher slopes around Chandanwari, depending on the season.

Is Pahalgam suitable for children and elderly travellers?

Yes. Main spots such as the riverside, Betaab Valley and Aru can be reached by road and have short, easy walks. Pony rides and longer walks are optional. Elderly travellers should carry warm layers and take it slowly on long days out. Rafting has its own age and safety rules, so check with the operator first.
