About Doodhpathri

About Doodhpathri

Doodhpathri is a wide green meadow in Budgam district. Pine and fir forests surround it, and the Shaliganga stream runs over smooth stones through the middle.

The name is usually translated as "valley of milk". Locals say it comes from the way the water froths white over the rocks, and from an old story about the saint Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani (Nund Rishi), who struck the ground looking for water for prayer and found milk. It sits at around 2,700 m (close to 9,000 ft), so the air is cool even in summer.

Doodhpathri is usually much quieter than Gulmarg or Pahalgam, and that is the main reason to go. You won't find big hotels or busy markets here. You get open grass, grazing sheep, shepherds' huts and lots of room to sit by the water. Most families visit on a relaxed day trip from Srinagar. It suits anyone who wants a slower, quieter day in their Kashmir itinerary.

What to see and do.

  1. Walk along the Shaliganga stream, where cold, clear water rushes over the stones. The banks make a lovely picnic spot, but keep children back from the edge, because the current is fast and the water is very cold.
  2. Spread out on the main meadow, a wide stretch of grassland ringed by pine and fir forest, where there is usually room to find your own quiet corner.
  3. Take a pony ride to the farther viewpoints and meadow edges, arranged with the local pony operators at the site.
  4. Look out for shepherds and their flocks, which graze here through the warmer months.
  5. Enjoy the drive from Srinagar through Budgam's villages, orchards and paddy fields. The road gets greener as it climbs.
  6. Take photos of the forest-lined slopes and the stream, especially in soft morning or late-afternoon light.
  7. In winter, if the weather and road allow a visit, see the valley under snow, a very different and peaceful landscape.

Ask on WhatsApp
Can Doodhpathri be done as a day trip from Srinagar?

Yes. It's about 40-45 km away, roughly 1.5-2 hours each way, which makes a comfortable day trip. Leave in the morning and you'll have plenty of time in the meadow before heading back.

Is Doodhpathri suitable for families with children and elderly travellers?

Generally yes. The main meadow is open, but the ground is uneven in places and there is a short walk from the parking area. Ponies are available for longer distances. Bring warm clothes and basic supplies, as facilities on site are simple.

Will there be snow at Doodhpathri?

Snow usually falls in winter, but timing and amount vary every year, so we can't promise snow on particular dates. Heavy snow can also close the road. Check conditions close to your travel date, or ask us for an update.
