Sonamarg means "meadow of gold", and on a clear summer morning it is easy to see where the name comes from. The town sits at about 2,800 metres in Ganderbal district, on the Srinagar-Leh highway.
The Sindh river runs right beside the road, with pine forest and snow-capped peaks on both sides. It is often quieter and more open than Gulmarg or Pahalgam, and many families visit it as a full day trip from Srinagar.
Most visitors come for the Thajiwas glacier, a short pony ride or walk from the main market. Beyond the town, the highway climbs towards Zoji La, the high pass that leads into Ladakh. Several well-known Himalayan treks also start from Sonamarg, including the Kashmir Great Lakes route. Whether you stay one night or just a few hours, the mix of river, meadow and glacier makes it a stop you will remember on any Kashmir trip.
What to see and do.
Ride a pony or walk up to the Thajiwas glacier area, where snow often lingers into early summer against a backdrop of high peaks.
Spend time along the Sindh river, which runs beside the town and makes for easy riverside walks and photo stops.
Take a local taxi up the highway towards Zoji La and the snow areas beyond for dramatic mountain views, when the road is open and conditions allow.
Relax on the open meadows around the town, a good spot for picnics, short walks and slow afternoons with children.
Drive up the Sindh valley from Srinagar, past villages, fields and pine forest, so the journey becomes part of the day.
Trekkers can start the Kashmir Great Lakes route near Sonamarg. It is a multi-day trek past alpine lakes and needs a guide, proper gear and planning.
Try trout fishing on the river. The fisheries department sets the seasons and issues the permits you need, so check current rules first.

Local tips.
What we tell our own guests before they head to Sonamarg.
Local sightseeing, such as rides to the Thajiwas glacier area or towards Zoji La, runs on authorised local union taxis and ponies. Agree on the route and fare before you set off, and check current rates.
Carry warm layers and a rain jacket even in summer. It gets cold quickly near the glacier and in the evenings.
If you are doing a day trip, leave Srinagar early so you have enough daylight at the glacier and for the drive back.
Roads beyond Sonamarg, especially over Zoji La, can close because of snow or maintenance. Check the current road status before you plan anything past the town.
Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, because snow near the glacier can be slippery. Stay off snow bridges over streams and keep away from overhanging snow and ice.

Yes. Many visitors drive up in the morning, spend a few hours at the glacier and meadows, and return to Srinagar by evening. If you want a slower trip, or plan to go towards Zoji La, an overnight stay in Sonamarg is more relaxed.
Will there be snow in Sonamarg when I visit?
Snow depends on the season and the weather, so no one can promise it on a particular date. Winter and early spring usually have the most snow, and in early summer some snow often remains around the Thajiwas glacier area. Ask us closer to your travel dates for current conditions.
Can our tour cab take us to the glacier and Zoji La?
Usually not. Outside cabs normally stop at Sonamarg, and sightseeing beyond the town runs on local union taxis or ponies. Your driver or our team can help you arrange them. Fares and rules change, so check current rates locally.
